FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,
The ideology of Planned Parenthood is contained, in part in the "Humanist manifesto, Part II."  Among other things, it claims that there is no divine purpose or plan for the human race; traditional religions are obstacles to human progress; that ethics are autonomous and situational; that reason and science alone count; that faith has no place.  It is a stifling document; although it answers the question "What?" it hardly begins to answer "Why?"   That is to say, that manifesto tells us what humanism is but it doesn't tell us why there are humans in the first place.  In order to counteract the false ideology of Planned Parenthood and to help "Save our Children,"   I have decided to reprint the articles I wrote last Fall on Christian Morality called "Why be Good?"  The first article deals with Christian anthropology, an initial attempt to answer the "What?" and "Why?” of being human.

Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

WORSHIP COMMISSION MEETING will be on Monday, August 11, at 7:30PM in Deacon Bob Schroeder’s office.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is open to those adults who wish to become Catholic or who simply wish to find out more about their Catholic faith.  If you or someone you know would like to attend RCIA, please contact Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 or at w8cro@arrl.net. Deacon Schroeder would be happy to send an invitation to them for RCIA.  The RCIA begins in mid-September and continues through the month of April.

WHY BE GOOD

Our Human Dignity and Eternal Destiny

A few years ago I spoke to the RCIA candidates about Basic Christian Morality.  One the catechists suggested that I do the same during my Sunday homily. At first I resisted but I have since decided to follow up on the suggestion.  Later, during the four Wednesdays in Lent, Fr. Mike Seger, a moral theologian at our seminary, will present Catholic Morality in greater detail. In the homily today, I desired to address the foundation of Christian Morality: the dignity of a human being and his or her eternal destiny.  It has ten characteristics.  Six are drawn from Natural Law (nature, here, means that which makes something what it is) and four from Divine Revelation (that is, God's self-disclosure to us).  From natural law we know that man/woman can: 1) think; 2) choose; 3) love; he is 4) a body-person; 5) unique though social; 6) historical.  From the Old Testament, God reveals that man/woman is 7) made in his image and likeness (Gn. 1:27); 8) fundamentally good (Gn.1:31); 9) God's partner in creation (Gn. 1:28). Finally, the New Testament reveals that we are adopted sons and daughters of the Father, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit (see Mt. 25).  In sum, we are creatures composed of body and soul and made in the image and likeness of God; the likeness to God is chiefly in the soul.  That is our dignity. We are made to know, love and serve God in this life and to be happy with Him in the next. That is our destiny.  And all of it forms the basis for Christian Morality.

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

A reflection on my recent trip to the Holy Land:

A highlight of our pilgrimage was our being able to have Mass each day at one of the Holy sites and my being able to assist as a deacon and read the Gospel.  It is customary that when visiting the Holy sites, the Mass readings correspond to the place.  When we had Mass in the location where Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish we read the account of that miraculous feeding and when we had Mass at the Holy Sepulcher (Jesus’ tomb) we heard about Jesus’ resurrection, for instance.  One memorable Mass took place at the Church of the Visitation, just outside Jerusalem.  It was there that Mary and her sister Elizabeth met, John “leaped” in Elizabeth’s womb, and Mary spoke the words of the “Magnificat” (Luke 1:39-56) – her beautiful song of praise to God.  The vestment that I wore that day had “MAGNIFICAT” in large letters across it, reminding us that it was in this place that Mary first prayed these words.  Each Saturday evening before Mass our parish celebrates evening prayer and every evening at the rectory the priests and I pray evening prayer – which always includes praying the Magnificat.  That prayer will have new meaning for me now that I have been to the place that Mary first voiced that song of joy.  This song continues to echo as we say with Mary: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord!”

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Conscientious Catholics from the beginning of the Church have prayerfully, often courageously, sought to serve by putting their faith into action; being well informed witnesses is a responsibility shared by each of us.  “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses.” (Acts 1:8)

With the arrival of the abortion industry’s Planned Parenthood chain so near to our children (see our www.ProtectCincinnati.org), parish families in the community have joined together to serve as His witnesses.

In the midst of these local challenges, the state of Ohio has had a historic catastrophe take place: HUMAN CLONING is not banned by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland!  Many pro-life Ohio legislators worked to have a vital amendment that would ban funding of human cloning, an intrinsic evil, only to have Ohio’s Governor, a public supporter of human cloning, strike out this ban!  Outrageous! Another floodgate has been open against the sanctity of human life. Hopefully a moral outcry will arise from our Church leaders and fellow citizens.  Just because human beings are intellectually and scientifically capable of pursuing a certain path does not mean that it is a path to be taken.  Human cloning is abhorrent.  Cross breeding humans with other mammals is likewise immoral.  This life God has given to each human is not a C rated Sci-Fi film.  There was another time only sixty plus years ago that science also took a horrible direction:  the sadistic medical experimentation on victims destined for death because they were of a different religion…the Death Camps of Nazi Germany.  Consider rectifying this appalling state of affairs...call your elected officials & Governor Strickland's office 614-466-3555 http://governor.ohio.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=448

God calls us to be His witnesses.  http://www.catholicculture.org/library/view.cfm?recnum=8306
