FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Today, the Sunday between Christmas and the Solemnity of the Mother of God (1/1) is the Feast of the Holy Family. It was instituted by Pope Benedict XV after he witnessed the devastation of families after World War One. As Providence would have it, December 28, is also the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Is it not ironic that Herod was devastating families by infanticide in order to find the New-born King and therefore save his own throne? In short, families have been under attack since Cain slew Abel. Families are under attack today. That is why it is even more important to respect and celebrate family life. God Himself did by "hiding" within His family in Nazareth, sharing in the "joys and hopes, fears and sorrows" which seem to find their way to every family, including His own. I especially want to salute and encourage all of our parents who strive to "rear their children in the practice of the faith”, especially by seeing it to it that they come to Mass every Sunday. I want to encourage and salute children who obey their parents, especially teens, and children who stand by their parents as they meet with the loneliness and hardships of old age. Finally, I pray that the Holy Family will watch over those families who are grieving the loss of a loved one at this time of year. Holy Family, intercede for us all.

Father Larry Mick Burse: A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation. A burse currently: * To be established requires a minimum pledged donation of $25,000. * Provides naming opportunity rights – benefactor or honoree, or as a memorial. * Is regulated by the board of trustees with interest presently allocated annually at six percent. Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will. Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.” The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009. We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.
Today
is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We hear the
words: "The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the
favor of God was upon him." As we remember the poor during the New Year
may we also grow in wisdom and have the favor of God upon us. Please
remember to support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the coming
year so that together we can continue to bring comfort and peace to our
brothers and sisters who are suffering. |

Rev 21:5 tells us,” Behold, I make all things new."

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family. The Church has always upheld the importance of the family, even calling it the “domestic church.” The family after all is often the first place where the faith is taught. Parents teach their children the faith in this context, ideally modeling for them lives of prayer and virtue. Perhaps your New Year’s resolution this year might involve your commitments to your family – spending more time with your spouse and/or children, sitting down together for dinner as often as possible, or making time to share activities as a family. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph pray for us!
THE ATHLETIC CLUB will be holding its annual board member elections in early 2009. Also the Equipment Room Coordinator and the Schott Field Concession Stand Coordinator positions need to be filled. If interested in running for the Athletic Club Board or for more info, please call Todd Logan at 922-1782 or e-mail at toddklogan@msb.com prior to the January 15th meeting at 8PM in the undercroft.
FROM MANAGER TO PEAR TREE Can you imagine not being permitted to freely say “Merry Christmas” and having to conceal your beliefs by describing them in seemingly unrelated words, singing them in an apparently happy, nonsensical song? Those conditions did occur in Europe from 1558 to 1829. The Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas, is a result of people’s need to conceal their beliefs according to The Handbook of Catholic Sacramental by Ann Ball. The song contains hidden meanings of faith such as the “true love” mentioned in the song refers to God. The “me” who receives the presents is symbolic of every baptized person. Partridge in a pear tree- Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from helpless nestlings. Two turtle doves- The Old and New Testaments Three French hens- Faith, Hope, and Charity Four calling birds- The four Gospels Five golden rings- The first five books of the Old Testament which outline humanity’s fall from grace. Six geese a-laying-- The six days of creation Seven swans a-swimming – Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit Eight maids’ a-milking – The eight Beatitudes Nine ladies dancing—nine fruits of the Holy Spirit Ten lords a-leaping—The Ten Commandments Eleven pipers piping – The eleven faithful disciples Twelve drummers drumming— the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed. |
