FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Brian and Monica Hurley and family are this year's recipients of the Pro Life/Pro Family “Heroes for Life" award.  Brian is a lawyer who has taken a case involving Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio.  At least one third of Planned Parenthood's income results from abortions.   Among other things, the current case alleges that Planned Parenthood violated the law by its failure to report child abuse.  Whatever the outcome of the case, abortion remains the ultimate child abuse.  It is a horrible form of torture, and constantly needs to be exposed as such.  Abortion will come to an end, as did slavery, when people believe it to be unthinkable to abort a child, when it is rightly condemned as an inhumane and barbaric practice, when it is, at last, seen as an unspeakable crime against humanity.   Brian Hurley will speak about the case after the 11:30 AM Mass today in the undercroft.  His family friendly presentation will be about 15 minutes and he will informally take questions afterwards since the legal case is still in litigation. Congratulations Brian, Monica and Family!

THURSDAY, JANUARY 22 is a national day of penance for the sins against life, especially abortion. Our bishops have called for works of charity, piety or penance (fasting/abstinence).  We will have a special Mass on Thursday, January 22, at 7:30PM in Church for LIFE!

FORTY HOURS will begin after the 8AM Mass on Friday, January 30, and will continue through the night hours and on Saturday, January 31.  Please come: COULD YOU NOT SPEND ONE HOUR WITH ME?  Signup sheets are in the greeting room.

VALENTINE ROUND-UP is the place to be on Saturday, February 14, beginning at 6:30PM in the St. Antoninus Undercroft. Tickets went out to parishioners in the mail last week.  Bring your friends!  Buy a table!

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR will be the last three week-ends in March 14/15, 21/22, 27/28, on Saturday mornings, from 8:30AM to 12 noon and Sunday evenings, from 5:30PM to 9PM.  Watch the bulletin for more details about this powerful spiritual experience for LENT.

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.  Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

THE LESSONS IN CAROLS CD’S are available at the rectory office during normal business hours of 8AM to 3PM, Monday thru Friday.

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards and the 2008 Entertainment and Zone Books are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

LAST CHANCE TO BUY YOUR 2009 ENTERTAINMENT OR ZONE BOOKS!  Still only $20 each. Sale ends Sunday, January 25th!  Books are sold daily at the rectory, after all weekend Masses with the Kroger/Biggs cards, or call Larry Hurley at 608-7604.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel today, John testifies that Jesus is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.  The revelation of Jesus’ identity – how He is made known in the world – is mediated by the way we live our lives every day.  As you place your gift in the poor box,  you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

As Catholic Schools Week approaches, I feel a sense of excitement as we gear up to showcase all the great things that happen here at St. Antoninus. Last week I wrote about our test scores being above the 90th percentile. This past week the first round of high school scholarships were announced. At press time, scholarship announcements are still trickling in from parents. If your child received a scholarship this year, be sure to let us know! The amount of scholarships awarded to St. Antoninus School this year so far totals over $233,000.00! A list of students earning scholarship awards will be forthcoming as soon as we give our parents a chance to notify us. Just a reminder, our Open House will be next Sunday, January 25, after the 11:30 Mass. New student registration will be the following Sunday, February 1, after each Mass. The St. Antoninus yard signs were a big hit and we have had to order more. If you wish to put a sign in your yard, please come to the school office and sign a request form.

ST. ANTONINUS YARD SIGNS

In preparation for Catholic Schools Week, the school is selling St. Antoninus yard signs. Each sign displays a St. Antoninus jaguar and “A” plus the phrase, “St. Antoninus Parish School – A Great Place to Grow.” If you would like to order a sign, send a check for $5 along with your name and address to the school office. Any questions call Susan Kock at 922-8755 or Jennifer Lambert at 244-1741.

ADULT SOCIAL GROUP

Monday, February 9: “Tax Review” (if possible) All lunch monies are due one week before the lunch date.

March: “The Lewis & Clark Expedition”

April: “Mysterious Boxes”

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

According to a recent study those who favor the right to abortion without restriction (including the so-called “Freedom of Choice Act”) do not represent the beliefs of the vast majority of Americans. Only 8% of Americans favor unrestricted access to abortion. Most Americans (60%) believe that abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother (all of which accounts for less than 3% of abortions). Should a minor request an abortion, 75% of Americans support parental notification. Most Americans do not support the radical measures contained in the Freedom of Choice Act. They do not believe abortion is a basic “right” like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. Now is the time to stand up against radical pro-choice politicians and help protect the most basic of rights – the right to life.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

How do we deal with these bad times and our culture of death? How do we keep from becoming depressed and despondent? What does our future hold for us? On Tuesday, in Chapel, at 7:30 PM, Diane Autenrieb’s talk, “Hope for the Future in Tough Times” will try to provide some answers. There are ways to sustain us through faith. Our future is not without hope, but is held in God’s hands.

SKATING PARTY will be on Monday, January 19, from 6 to 8:30PM at the Western Rollarama.

SUNDAY VESPERS will be on Sunday, January 25, at 7:30PM in the Chapel of St. Gregory the Great at the Athenaeum of Ohio-Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.

The Lay Pastoral Ministry Program is accepting applications for Fall 2009 Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and non-degreed Certificate programs. MAPM and first year Certificate classes will meet on the main campus in Mount Washington. Second year certificate classes will meet at St. Dominic. Completion of either option fulfills the pre-requisite for application to the Permanent Diaconate. For info call 231-1200.

SETON SPIRITWEAR SHOP is open every day from 10:30 to 12:45PM. All outerwear is 20% off, t-shirts $8.00 and everything else (except uniform shirts) is 15% off.
