FROM OUR PASTOR By the time you read this, The Life in the Spirit Seminar will be nearly over. Last Sunday evening, we had two wonderful speakers on forgiveness. One of them was Raveen Rajavarma, a convert from Hinduism to Catholicism. I was deeply impressed by his grasp of Sacred Scripture and his teaching on forgiveness. He lead us through Mt. 18, Lk 6:27 and "Dives Misericordiae" the encyclical of Pope John Paul II on forgiveness. In particular, he used the image of the "forgiveness ladder" in explaining Lk 6:27. The steps are; 1) pray; 2) bless; 3) do good; 4) love. He reminded us that one of the most distinguishing features of Christianity is the Lord's teaching on forgiveness. I wish the whole parish could have heard him. I also want to take this opportunity to remind us all to seek the Lord's forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this holy season of Lent. It will make the Lord's Resurrection all the more glorious! -- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL Priests generally retire at age 70, or beyond, often after 40-45 years of active service and ministry - many far exceed the typical years of most professions. Our senior priests are self-supporting and can no longer rely upon the parish services that once provided basic living expenses during their years of active ministry. Yet, many senior priests continue to lead lives of active ministry well into their retirement years, performing valuable services such as celebrating liturgies, ministering to the sick, visiting hospitals and providing spiritual counseling. Living longer means drawing from the Priests’ Retirement Fund – our own retirement Fund - for a longer period of time. Please help us by making a donation to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. For info see www.CatholicAppeal.info.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY Dear Parishioners, On Friday, March 20, elementary principals from Catholic schools on the Westside met with State Representatives Driehaus, Mecklenborg, and Blessing, along with State Senator Seitz. Our conversations revolved primarily around two line items in the state budget which affect Catholic schools: administrative cost reimbursement and auxiliary money. Since the days of former Governor Celeste, Ohio has funded both public and non-public schools under the principle of parity. Under this principle, whatever happened to public school funding would happen to non-public school funding by the same percentage. For example if public school funding went up by 2.5% non-public funding went up by the same percentage. Unfortunately, the latest budget proposal showed non-public schools seeing no increase in funding over the next biennium, while public schools see an in-crease. This breaks with the long standing principle of parity. Soon our state representatives and senators will be working on the budget. Unless they hear from us, they will not have the support needed to change the proposed budget. In the following weeks, our parish will spearhead a letter writing campaign. Without adjustments made to funding for non-public schools, Catholic schools will exist only for the few. Catholic schools are good stewards of taxpayers’ money. We save tax dollars and turn out highly educated Catholic students. Please help us continue the principle of parity.

Many of you know that I am a big fan of college basketball, particularly XU. “March Madness” is a great thrill for me, especially the first two rounds of the tournament which are usually the most interesting. It seems that often the tournament coincides with the end of our season of Lent. At first it may seem that there is no connection between the “Big Dance” and Lent, but I see a few parallels. First, there is heightened expectation as the 64 teams are reduced to 16, 8, 4, and finally 2. As Lent marches on, there is a sort of heightened expectation as we near Holy Week and the Easter Vigil. Next, there is a high degree of training/practice involved in college hoops – drills, practices, and plays. It is the same with us during Lent – practicing prayer, sacrifice, and almsgiving. The big difference, of course, is that, in the tournament, teams are steadily eliminated. In Lent, our Church, prepares not for elimination, but for growth as new members receive the sacraments for the first time.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH Parents, guardians, and adults who care for children face constant challenges when trying to help keep children safer in today's fast-paced world. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) offers easy-to-use safety resources to help address these challenges. NCMEC's website offers a range of practical information for parents and guardians that will help keep children safe from harm. The site also features an interactive quiz on child safety designed for both adults and children. To take the quiz, visit the NCMEC website at www.missingkids.com and click on "Child Safety."
Estimates are that approximately 60% of child abusers are men, 15 to 20% are women, and 20 to 40% are men and women acting together. So while men are indeed the majority of sexual abusers, it is dangerous to underestimate the risk that female sexual abusers also pose to children. Among educators, 57.2% of abusers are male, and 42.4% of abusers are female. Source: Charol Shakeshaft, Hofstra University, from a speech given at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. |
Steps to Safer Environments: The Archdiocese of Cincinnati mandates that adults who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo safe environment training. It is important to know the signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child. Programs for the safety of children and youth should be monitored Parents should be aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of children. Concerns should be communicated to the appropriate person in authority. For particular assistance, please contact Fr. Joe Binzer at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati at 263-6601.
April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Easter season. There is no better time than Easter to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God:our children.
Test Your Knowledge of Abuse Prevention. True or false? It is common for both child and adult victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone about the abuse. True. It is common for victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone. When the person was assaulted as a child, he or she may wait years or decades. The reasons for this are numerous: victims may want to deny the fact that someone they trusted could do this to them; they may just want to put it behind them; they may believe the myth that they caused the assault by their behavior; or they may fear how other people will react to the truth.
Teach Kids to Protect Themselves at Home. We consider our homes to be safe places for our children. But being home alone can pose risks for children. Here are a few tips to teach kids that will help keep them safe when you are not with them at home: Never answer the door if alone. Do not invite anyone in the house without the permission of a parent or babysitter. Don't tell anyone on the phone that your parents are not home. Instead, tell them that your parents can't come to the phone, and take a message. For more tips, please visit wWVtI.kidsa[e.com. Source: "Know the Rules ... After-School Safety Tips for Children Who Are Home Alone," www,kidsa!e.colJ1.
Help Reduce Abuse Statistics. Nationally, more than 2 million reports of abuse or neglect of minors are made each year. Only a small percentage of child abuse is ever reported. Learn how to spot suspected abuse or neglect, and how to report it to the proper authorities. For info, please contact those in your parish who are in charge of programs to safeguard children. |
