I continue to consider each phrase of the vision statement in turn: "I see a day when every member of St. Antoninus Parish engages in Divine Worship...when every member goes to confession every month." The Lord has ordained that the ordinary means of receiving His grace is through His sacraments. By confessing our sins we acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior. A great danger that we face as believers is "hardness of heart," which frequently manifest itself in a disregard for going to confession. The church commands us to go to confession at least once a year in order to full our Easter duty, that is, to receive Holy Communion during the Easter Season. In order to make sure that we are properly disposed to do so, the Sacrament of Penance is enjoined upon us. Again, hardness of heart can manifest itself: when we think we have no sins to confess; when we think that if we do confess them, we will be back again soon with the same sins; when we either presume on God's goodness or despair of His mercy for the sins we have committed. By going to confession on a regular basis, for example, once a month, we are given the grace to grow in Christian holiness and virtue, something we can never achieve on our own. "Come to Me all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you" in the Sacrament of Penance. Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong
+ Today’s second reading warns that a heart consumed with avarice and envy leads to jealousy, strife, conflicts, and disputes. A giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead with the psalmist, “Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness.” See Psalm 54 |

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY Many times as a Catholic school we are called to be counter-cultural. Turn on almost any advertisement and one will be bombarded by a company claiming to make life effortless. A pill will melt away fat. This gadget will clean your house, and this one will cook dinner for you, “just set and forget.” Our media driven culture makes one feel work, effort and self-denial are not necessary. A few years ago, many were made to believe that money and a good job were not necessary to own a big house. Of course we see where that ended. In Catholic schools we teach how Joseph did not disown Mary as the culture allowed, but became the foster-father of Jesus. We teach how Mary denied herself to follow God’s plan. We also teach about Christ’s ultimate act of self-denial, the acceptance of the cross, allows us to attain Heaven. We teach many forms of self-denial for their own benefit as well. For many students it is not playing a video game when there is a test to study for. This week the In-Control program teaches our 7th and 8th grade students about chastity, a form of self-denial that is seems to be more and more counter-cultural. We also teach that we need to go to Church every Sunday even when we would rather stay in bed, go to a sporting event, clean the house, etc. When we delay gratification and practice self-denial for the greater benefit, we become better people. In this way we also become a better community. A year after the near collapse of our economic system, this is a message we should want to impart to future generations.
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP Many have favorite books that aid in their time of prayer daily. Perhaps, it might be the Magnificat, the One Bread One Body, the Liturgy of the Hours, a favorite rosary meditation, or other prayers that have special meaning. Of course, the Bible is always a source of challenge and inspiration. This Tuesday evening we will share with one another those materials that have helped us in establishing a fruitful prayer life. Our hope is that by sharing what has worked, it will give each of us encouragement and new insight as we strive to enter more fully into life with Christ. In Chapel, Tuesday 7:30 PM.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LUNCH for the Habitat for Humanity construction volunteers on Saturday, October 17. If you would like to help, please call Julie Heil at 922-3848 in the evening. |
FROM OUR SEMINARIAN INTERN, MATTHEW J. ROBBEN Bitter Blessings: In grade school, I just knew that I would be a priest. My teenage years, however, brought a whole new experience, women. It was a post-concert party during my junior year when Amy and I met. We dated the rest of the school year and throughout the summer. We discussed every aspect of our future, including education, family, and marriage. The only area we disagreed upon was the number of children, and ultimately, God decides that one. Before Christmas of our senior year, Amy asked me to spend the holidays down south, getting acquainted with her grandparents. But I declined, so that I could spend time with my family. Arriving at her grandparents, Amy was immediately sent to the store to pick up a gallon of milk. On the way, she was broadsided by a drunk driver, forced off the road, hit a tree, and killed instantly. I could have responded to her death by turning to God and seeking support of family and friends. I chose however, to hide my emotions, pretend to be strong, and blame God. For years I was angry and tangled with God. I remember thinking that this was God’s way of “getting back” at me for not embracing my call to the priesthood. As I look back, I can see that Amy was and is the greatest blessing I could ever have received. A new profound sense of love and loss in my life has allowed me to take stock of the many blessings that the Lord has bestowed on me and continues to bestow upon me. I believe my love for and relationship with Amy will make me a more compassionate and understanding priest in the future, and for this, I am most grateful and blessed. This week I pray the Lord grants you the same grace, the ability to recognize the blessings He bestows upon you as you continue to live the Gospel message!

ST. JOHN VIANNEY AUGUST 4 (A.D. 1859) From Butler’s Lives of the Saints Continued from last week… In 1821 the district of Ars was made a succursal parish, and in 1823, it became part of the revived diocese of Belley. This was an occasion for slanderous attacks on M. Vianney (whose reforming zeal naturally made enemies for him) and his new bishop, Mgr. Devie, sent the dean to enquire what it was all about; but the bishop soon learned to have confidence in the Cure of Ars and later offered him an important parish elsewhere which he refused only after a good deal of hesitation. In the meanwhile the reputation of his holiness and achievements was also becoming known, and he was asked to give several parochial missions, when his confessional was always besieged. In 1824 there was opened at Ars by the enterprise of the cure a free school for girls, run by Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet, two young women of the village whom he had sent away to a convent to be trained. From this school sprang, some three years later, the famous institution of La Providence, a shelter for orphans and other homeless or deserted children, neither babies nor adolescent girls were turned away. Not a halfpenny was accepted from the inmates, even from girls who could pay, and neither Mlle Lassagne, Mlle Lardet, nor any other helper received any salary; it was a charity, run on alms, and its final end the saving of souls. At times there were sixty people thus being provided for, and the cure was hard put to it to support such a family. On one occasion the loft was found full of wheat under circumstances that clearly indicated a miracle, and on another occasion the cook testified to making ten 20lb. loaves from a few pounds of flour, at the prayer of M. Vianney. Such works as these slowly and surely brought about a change of heart among his parishioners, and visitors noticed and commented on their orderly appearance and good behavior; and it was the personal influence and example of the man himself that moved them in the first place: “Our cure is a saint and we must obey him”. “We are no better than other people, but we live close to a saint”. Some of them doubtless never got beyond that, to “It is the will of God, we must obey Him”, but still they persevered in obeying the cure precisely because he was a good man. And he, while his people were slowly and painfully coming back to a Christian life, was being the object of manifestations which would appear to be nothing less than a persecution by the Devil himself, as M. Vianney believed them to be. To be continued next week… |
