FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

When was the last time you took a bath or cleaned your house?  When was the last time you went to confession? These may seem like rather personal or impertinent questions but they do have a point.  Let me explain myself.  Flannery O'Connor, a southern Catholic writer and one of my favorite authors, was asked why she wrote novels in the grotesque style: “because in an age when people are so spiritually blind they need "to see EVIL writ large."’ In the same way, St. John the Baptist fiery preaching was meant to grab the attention of the people of his day precisely to remind them that the Promised Messiah was to save them from their sins.  I often think that our gratefulness for salvation is in proportion to our awareness of our sinfulness and the confession of our sins.  If we find it easy to excuse our own sinfulness, why be grateful to a Redeemer who "purchased not with any diminishable sum of silver or gold but with his own blood?"  If we find it easy to point out the faults of others, why be grateful that they too are the sinners the Promised Redeemer has come to save?  St. John preached a baptism of Repentance.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation, going to confession, has been called a second baptism because it washes away our sins in "His redeeming grace."  In order to help us make a good confession, this bulletin includes the examination of conscience.

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

On the last week-end of October, 625 parishioners took the Measuring Engagement Questionnaire, called ME25 either in Church or on-line. The twenty-five questions we meant to gauge spiritual commitments and congregational engagement. “Spiritual Commitment reflects a personal depth of spirituality. It is individual in nature, and is seen in both behaviors and attitudes”, (50). “Congregational engagement describes the degree of belonging an individual has in his or her congregation. They want to know they are valued and that they make meaningful contributions to the mission and ministry of their churches.. contributing their wealth and talents to accomplish something bigger than themselves. The result shows that 1 out of 5 who took the ME25 survey strongly agree that they are engaged members of St. Antoninus. That compares with about 1 out of 3 of the total faith Communities (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim) and with about 1 out of 6 Catholics only. Over the next few months I plan to publish a more in depth examination of the survey in the bulletin. I am very grateful to all who took the survey, to those who helped to input the responses, and to the H. Willis and Roberta Ratledge Foundation which has funded this project. CRA

INCENSE will be used at the following Christmas Masses. Eve: 3PM, 11PM; Day 9:30AM, 11:30AM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners, This past Thursday our second graders received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. What a wonderful way for them to prepare for Christmas. Congratulations to our second graders! As always, Advent is a busy time of preparation at home and at school. On Tuesday, we have an 8 a.m. all-school Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This Thursday, December 10, grades 1, 3, and 5 will present our Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Space is limited for the 1 p.m. production as all students who are not in the program come to watch their schoolmates. For those who cannot drive at night or who work in the evening, feel free to join us at 1:00. Next week we continue our Advent season preparations when grades 3-8 receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Friday, December 18, is the last day of school for all students and faculty until Monday, January 4, 2010.

6TH, 7TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS you are needed for the 9:30AM BABYSITTING PROGRAM ON SUNDAYS. Sign-up by calling the rectory office at 922-5400 or e-mail saintantoninus@fuse.net by Monday, December 7.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

Let Go! These two little words recently emerged as food for thought. Let go! This sounds easy enough on the surface, but in fact has significant physical, emotional, and spiritual implications. It is easy to look into the past and see the physical things of which we have “let go,” but the emotional and spiritual are much harder to identify. To “let go” requires action, sacrifice, and the ability to trust God enough to accept His plan as better than our own. This involves letting go of our will for God’s. It is never easy and never complete. Now that we are immersed in the Advent season, are you willing to “let go” and give yourself to God? As the old adage states: The more you give, the more you receive.

THE MAIN-A-VENT needs vacation homes, get-away packages or weekend packages for the live auction. To discuss details, please call Mark Baker at 451-0982.

CINCINNATI BELL CB LEARN PROGRAM: We began an effort to register our families and friends for the CB Learn Program through Cincinnati Bell this past year. We are not asking anyone to change their phone service, but if you are already using Cincinnati Bell or are making a switch, St. Antoninus can earn money if you will simply fill out a quick registration form. Several of our parents and grandparents signed up last year. You can register this year by going to http://www.cbts.cinbell.com/CBLearn/?id=8 and filling out the registration form - it only takes a minute. (A hard copy registration form is included in today's church bulletin for those without access to a computer. Additional copies are available in the school office.) It is our understanding that once these are in the database, you will no longer be required to fill out the form each year; we will just receive a check for your participation. St. Antoninus School has received $2,920 to date!! Thank you!! Please encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to sign up as well.
