Jesus, whom God called “my beloved Son,” is also the “servant” of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.    See Luke 3:22.

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Feast of Baptism of the Lord, which concludes the Christmas season.  It is a reminder that we as believers live in a different time zone which is liturgical and eternal. That time zone is to remind us that all time is holy, or as Thomas Merton put it, sacramental.  We will each render an account for how well we used the time which was allotted to us on earth.

Today, also marks the beginning of the National Vocational Awareness Week.  Matt Robben will be leading the parish in the "Called By Name Program" to surface names of those whom others in the parish may recognize as candidates for either ordained or consecrated life.  I also want to take this opportunity to thank those who have participated in the Traveling Chalice Program.  I encourage all of our parishioners to do so.

During this Year for Priests, our Holy Father has encouraged priests themselves to reflect on their own priestly vocations.  To that end, and in conjunction with the Holy Spirit Prayer Group, I will be leading a Bible Study "Sharing Christ's Priesthood" by Mike Aquilina on ten Tuesday evenings, beginning on Tuesday, January 26, at 7:30 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The following are the dates for the rest of the series: Feb. 16; March 2, 9, 16, 23; April 6, 13, 20, 27.

                                   Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: As of the beginning of January, 63 pilgrims are going.  Pentecost Tours sent new brochures, which are in the greeting room.  The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name should you contact Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800 or  travel@pentecosttours.com.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL has been offered for Carol Socrates.  Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

STOCK DONATIONS

If you wish to contribute stock to Saint Antoninus Parish Church, please contact Mrs. Steffany Reid, our business manager, at 922-5400 for instructions.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT

Last October, our Parish took the Measuring Engagement Survey (hereafter, ME 25), which consisted of 25 questions.  I published the results in the bulletin and made an announcement from the pulpit the week-end before Thanksgiving.  I also stated that I would begin to publish an individual commentary on each of the questions and their metrics.  Remember the survey was based on a 5 point scale: 5= strongly agree; 1= strongly disagree.  This is the first in that proposed series.
ME 01: "Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the way things are going in my life."  Of the 613 (out 625) parishioners who responded to that question, the average was 4.04 who agreed with that statement.  That compares with 3.98 agreement of all Catholics (15, 190 surveyed) and 3.89 of all denominations (38, 866 surveyed). By the way those numbers are 3 year rolling aggregates.
The following is based on Growing an Engaged Church. Common sense tells us that people who are part of a spiritually healthy congregation should be more satisfied with their lives that those who belong to no faith community or to an unhealthy congregation.  Gallup Research indicates that such is the case. Such people are not happy all the time; they do have sorrows in their lives.  But as members of a healthy congregation they are better able to cope; they have a sense of direction, stability and peace

Gift Card Program Update: THANK YOU to all the parishioners and friends who purchased gift cards through St. Antoninus during the Christmas season. The Scrips Gift Card program alone, new this year, created almost $2000 in profit for St. A. Thank you!! You feed your soul daily in prayer and weekly at Mass. Consider feeding your family using the Biggs $50 gift card or the Kroger re-chargeable card on a regular basis. Eat out? Consider using Price Hill Chili, Ron's Roost, The Holy Grail, Skyline or Chipotle! These vendors, plus Allison Landscaping, are in-stock and available before/after mass, thru school order form, or from the Rectory, daily 8:00-3:00 M-F. The pre-order Scrips program will continue in 2010 as well. Orders will be placed twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Mondays. Review the list of vendors -- Doing some remodeling? Do you have an upcoming birthday? Eat out at a restaurant listed on the order form? Plan ahead and order your cards thru St. A. The order form will appear in the bulletin twice a month, and can be turned in before/after mass at the gift card table, submitted through school, or dropped off at the rectory. These programs are a no-cost fundraiser for the parish.... it costs you nothing! Yet, it pays back to the parish a percentage every time you use the cards. Take a minute and support the program! Thank you, again, for making the program a great success!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

In mid-December we viewed one part of the video “Marian Apparitions of the 20th Century” with particular emphasis on Medjugorje and other recent apparition sites. As promised, we will cover the other sites on Tuesday. Because of a lack of media attention, these ten sites are not well-known throughout the world. Our video of the sites and their seers is fascinating and challenging. Are we listening to her warnings and her call to conversion and prayer? Seven of these sites have been approved by the Church as worthy of belief. Do we even know where they are, when they occurred, and that some are going on today? Come and be informed. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –

JACK COREY

Vocation Awareness Week starts today and continues until the 16th.  For more resources or information, we are blessed to have an excellent online resource sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati at www.cincinnativocations.org.  Mr. Robben, our seminarian intern, will be visiting classes to discuss vocations.

A simple way to reinforce vocation awareness is to ask one’s children or grandchildren what they think God is calling them to do.  Steer them toward prayer to discern what God wants.

This week also begins our Everybody Counts program which will culminate with our Everybody Counts Mass on Friday, January 22.  The primary purpose of Everybody Counts is to emphasize that all human life is precious from conception to natural death.

MARRIAGE ISSUES THAT DIVIDE THE CHURCH… Are you currently divorced but not remarried?  Are you or your spouse remarried after experiencing a divorce?  Were you married outside the Church?  In September 2009, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr held several public meetings concerning these issues.  You may still have questions or perhaps you could not attend one of those sessions.  Whatever your circumstances, we would like to help you!  Having information about marriage cases is a good first step which could lead to current civil marriages being celebrated (convalidated) in the Catholic Church.  We invite any parishioners who are affected by these issues to contact us.  Please call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 to set up a completely confidential appointment.  May God bless you.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord and the beginning of his public ministry. This it is a good time to reflect upon the ministry of Christ and his call for men and women to dedicate their lives to ministry within his Church as priests or religious brothers or sisters. It has been said that it is the duty for every young Catholic to ask if he or she has a vocation to serve Christ’s Church. This question is often posed, but the answer is muddled in today’s cultural values. This is where you come in! Is there someone you believe might have a vocation to the priesthood or the religious life? Have you given such a one any encouragement? If not, this weekend you have the chance to do so by participating in the Called By Name program here at St. Antoninus. We ask that you either fill out a form in Church or email the names of those you believe have a religious vocation to saintantoninus@fuse.net. Father Armstrong will send a personalized letter to each person so that lines of communication can be opened and hopefully clear the confusion. Remember, all of us are responsible for the promotion of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. God makes the call. But to one afraid to answer, we need to give help.

ST. JOSEPH K OF C will sponsor a PANCAKE BREAKFAST on Sunday, January 31, from 8AM to 1 PM in the Taylor High School Cafeteria, across from St. Joseph Church. A child 5-10 years of age is $3 and adults are $5. The proceeds will benefit the Pregnancy Center West. For tickets call Dave Willig at 451-6192.

Seton High School is hosting Power of the Purse – Girls’Night Out on Thursday, January 14, 6:30 p.m. in the Seton Commons and Gymnasium. The night promises lots of fun and laughter with your friends and great purses! Designer handbags from Coach, Prada, Donney & Bourke, Liz Claiborne, Fossil and many more will be featured in live and silent auctions. Enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, desserts and cocktails featuring the Setontini, beer, wine and soft drinks. Live entertainment by Excalibur. The cost is $40 a person. Reservation forms are available at www.setoncincinnati.org or call Kelley Neu at 471-2600 x188. Must be 21years old or over to attend.
