FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Today we begin Catholic Schools week with our faculty in attendance for the 11:30AM Mass, followed by an Open House at our Parish School.  If you have not been in our parish school for awhile, now is the time to go. The place is alive with learning!  When I was in Rome for the North American College reunion, I sat at a lunch table with priests and bishops from a number of dioceses around the United States. To a man, they were impressed when I told them that over 460 children were in our parish school.  I remain convinced not only by their reaction but also by the history of the Church in our country that our school system is one of the best ways to hand on the faith. The true test of the success of any parish school is this: has it (or have we) produced faith-filled well-educated Catholics?   Finally, I want to repeat what I have mentioned before, that it is a privilege to be the pastor of parish with such a vibrant school.  I am grateful to our principal, faculty and staff for the outstanding job they are doing in educating our young parishioners day after day.  I am grateful for the generosity not only of you, our parents, who sacrifice to send your children, but also to you, our generous benefactors, both spiritual and temporal, who keep our parish school a great place to grow in the Lord!

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: As of the beginning of January, 63 pilgrims are going.  Pentecost Tours sent new brochures, which are in the greeting room.  The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name should you contact Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800 or at  travel@pentecosttours.com.

BLESSING OF THROATS will be on Wednesday, February 3, within the context of the 6:45 and 8:00AM Masses.  You may also attend with the school children starting at 8:30AM to 9:30AM.

ANSWER THE CALL -- CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCE will take place on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Music Hall.  If you would like tickets for this event, order forms are available from Deacon Bob Schroeder.  Please call him at 922-4759.  Because of the cost of unsold tickets, we will not be ordering tickets in a block.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT ME04: "Because of my faith, I have forgiven people who have hurt me deeply."  Of the 580 parishioners out of 625 who turned in the survey, 38% strongly agreed, 38% agreed, 18% neither agreed nor disagreed, 5% disagreed, and 2% strongly disagreed with that statement.  Of the 14, 867 Catholics who answered this question, the average score was 4.01/5; and of all respondents from all denominations, the average score was 4.09/5. [Remember: "5" means one strongly agrees with a statement.]  According to Growing an Engaged Church, forgiveness is a primary tenet of the world's great religions, even though the means and methods differ.  Those religions recognize that forgiveness without faith is difficult at best, and that faith in something bigger than one’s self is necessary.  For Christians, forgiveness is at the very heart of their faith.  The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ reconcile us to God.  Nearly 1 out of 2 Americans strongly agree that their faith gives them the power to forgive.

Gift Card Program Update: Biggs $50 gift card or the Kroger re-chargeable card are in-stock and available before/after Mass, thru school order form, or from the Rectory, daily 8:00-3:00 M-F. Also see the pre-order Scrips form in this bulletin.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –

JACK COREY

This Sunday marks the start of Catholic Schools Week.  The theme for Catholic Schools Week is: Dividends for Life.  We wish to thank all of our parishioners for your support of our school.  As many know, our school is the largest ministry of the parish.  Please feel welcome to come to our Open House and see firsthand the good things that happen here.  Our Open House is right after the 11:30 Mass.

New student registration is next week, February 7th, after all Sunday Masses.  Anyone considering St. Antoninus School is encouraged to come to the Open House.  Come and see what happens when our school pays Dividends for Life.

CONGRATULATIONS to our 8th grade students, Christine A. and Jennifer H. on receiving academic scholarships to Seton High School.

BE A SPIRITUAL SPONSOR FOR A CONFIRMATION CANDIDATE. The names, addresses and photos of our candidates for Confirmation will be on a board in the greeting room.  Please consider taking one of the doves from the board and serving as a spiritual sponsor for that candidate – praying for that student, sending notes of encouragement and, perhaps, attending Confirmation yourself on Thursday, March 11, at 7:30pm.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

Adoration: the acknowledgement of God as God, Creator and Savior, the Lord and Master of everything that exists. (CCC)

An important part of my discernment to the seminary was Adoration during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. I spent so much time in Church on my days off work that a friend questioned what I could possibly do for so many hours. The answer, of course, is prayer. Whether the Rosary, personal prayer, scripture study, reading a good spiritual book (like the works of the Saints), or any other host of ways to pray, it was and still is a chance to stop, slow myself down, and allow our Lord to touch and guide my heart to an intimate relationship with Him. St. Antoninus is blessed to have Eucharistic Exposition every Friday after the 8:00 A.M. Mass till 10:00 PM. However, on Friday February 5th, through the 7th, the parish will have an extraordinary chance to experience the power of the Eucharist during the 40 Hours celebration. It is a chance for us to sit, pray, and adore our Lord and let him lead and guide us.

ST. A  WIDOWS    During the past year, the St. A. women who have been widowed in 2008 or 2009 have been gathering periodically.  Since it seems helpful to each of us, we now wish to invite the other St. A women who have been widowed in earlier years.  Our next get-together is Friday, February 5, 2010.  On that day, the first day of the parish 40 Hours celebration, we will gather in the Chapel at 12:30PM for a half hour of prayer.  Afterward, we will enjoy lunch together at a restaurant.  We do hope you will consider joining us on February 5.  If you would like to attend, or have questions, please call Rosemary Garmann at 922-2336, before February 2.  May God bless all of us!

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel today, Jesus shows us that we are called to place gospel values before any other values and to be willing to put our lives on the line for them. Taking care of God's poor is indeed living gospel values. Your 5th Sunday contribution will help us in our mission of taking care of God's poor.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Most of us know the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us at our Confirmation. But, perhaps, we are not aware of the deeper meaning of these gifts. They can have a great impact on us and our culture. Joe Brinck will speak Tuesday evening on two of the gifts, counsel and strength. The gift of counsel does not so much mean “advice” for our lives as it does “strategy” or “planning” that will result in justice for the poor, hope for those who are suffering, and God’s shalom peace for all. The gift of strength (or fortitude) is not limited to spiritual strength but also gives us physical strength “to run the race” and to serve the Lord with all our might. Come and hear Joe as he speaks of these gifts and the way he has used them in his life. In Chapel, Tuesday 7:30PM.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Your prayers and tenacious public witness for life continue to make a difference! We share the hope that the current “Health” care bills will be unsuccessful in institutionalizing the Culture of Death in America…not only must abortion no longer be viewed as health care but the evil of euthanasia and assisted suicide must be explicitly excluded as well.  With the surprise recent election of Brown in Mass. it appears that there is more hope of protecting life.  Prayers.

Nationally and locally, our joint diligence is needed to address attacks on the sanctity of human life:  pro life pregnancy centers are under attack. Baltimore’s city council, despite the strong opposition by local Catholic hierarchy, passed a restriction law backed up with hefty fines and aimed solely at pro life centers. The University of Cincinnati student newspaper and others elsewhere in the country have purposefully maligned local pro-life pregnancy centers (though UC editors had the truth in hand, they chose not to use it).

Cincinnati City Council (12/16/09) enacted an appalling new “Right of Way” sign ordinance legislation (sponsor, Chris Bortz), aimed at stifling the current constitutionally protected freedom of speech of pro life sidewalk-counselors in front of abortion death sites. (see SaintAntoninus.org/Organizations/pro-life) On the surface the law appears only to address vendors but in fact, it is actually the covert suppression of one’s free speech as a social justice demonstrator…which is its original intent, as Planned Parenthood has long sought to stop the current “bad for their bu$iness” pro-life signage from being in front of their abortion headquarters see CincinnatiRighttoLife.org.  The law passed (5-4) despite our presentation of strong legal precedents, the Archdiocese’s pro-life efforts and the articulate arguments supporting free speech expression given by City Council members Cecil Thomas, Chris Monzel and Leslie Ghiz (shared also by Charlie Winburn).  Mr. Bortz actually told me:  “There’s only one vote per person so there should only be one sign/person!”

But through it all, how inspiring it is to see the future in the faces of our young students! On 1/22 tens of thousands marched in Wash. DC for LIFE.  Closer to home our parish eighth graders welcomed me and other pro-life witnesses for their Everybody Counts program.  Thanks!  They know we are of infinite value because each is a child of God!  Not the criteria of “wantedness” espoused by the Culture of Death.  The students have it right: “A person’s a person no matter how small”!

God is good!

Jane Hoffman, St. Antoninus Pro-Life/Pro-Family Committee
