Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits which the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the Promised Land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

While I was Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, I had a small poster above the light switch to my office.  The image was modeled after Guido Reni's depiction of St. Michael the Archangel slaying the devil.  Above the picture, there was a declaration: "There is a battle going on"  and below it was a question "Who's side are you on?"  As we begin Lent and reflect on the Lord's own wrestling with the devil, I have been thinking about the spiritual combat that will be ours the Forty Days of Lent.  Will I be a slugger or a sluggard?  Will I rally to the battle cry of prayer, fasting and almsgiving or will I show battle fatigue and give up in the good fight?  In Exodus 17:8ff, when Moses prayed with hands held aloft, the Israelites were winning the battle; when his hands drooped, they began to lose.  Then Aaron and Hur came to Moses' aid and held his hands aloft.  Israel won the battle that day.  And so will we if we continue to encourage one another to pray, fast and give alms this holy season of Lent.  After all, there is a battle going on; who's side will we be on?

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT ME 07: "I will take unpopular stands to defend my faith." Of the 605/625 parish respondents to this questions, 42% strongly agreed, 40% agreed, 15 % neither agreed nor disagreed, 2% disagreed, and 1% strongly disagreed. The parish average was 4.18/5.  Among Catholics, the average was 4.08/5; among all denominations, the average was 4.07/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, "being spiritually committed requires an element of courage."  Despite the pressure to acquire more and more, the innate spirituality of human beings rises to the surface. It cannot be suppressed for long.  Spiritually committed people stand firm in the face of opposition.  That does not necessarily mean being confrontational.  Usually it means that "they often quietly but noticeably do the difficult and right thing when all the others around them are taking the easy way out."

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name, should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800.

The Main-A-Vent was a grand success. Thanks to all of our sponsors, donors, benefactors, patrons and dedicated volunteers.    CRA

OUR LADY OF FATIMA PRAYER GROUP will be showing the movie “The 13th Day" on Monday, February 22, at 6:30 PM in the Chapel. This movie is a remake of the original "The Story of Fatima".  The Fatima message is so relevant to the world today, as it was when it was first issued to the 3 shepherd children.    The movie is 90 minutes long.  For info, call Mark Braunstein at 941-0410, or email at pmbsteen@yahoo.com

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY

Kudos to those who organized, volunteered, and donated items in order to make the St. Antoninus Main A-vent a success.  Events like this one, among other things, allow the parish to subsidize the Catholic education our students are receiving.  St. Antoninus Parish is committed to keeping our parish school affordable while providing a top academic and Catholic education.

Events which require volunteers such as the fish fry, our jog-a-thon, parish clean up, and the festival all provide us an opportunity to come together as a community outside of Mass.  I encourage everyone to volunteer for at least one parish activity.  While working with others in the parish, you will feel engaged, you will meet great people, and you will feel better about your parish when you are done.

Please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life by calling Debbie at 922-2414. Thank you to Dave and Jenny Burger Family who took the Traveling Chalice into their home for one week.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

This Sunday, at the 11:30 Mass, we will celebrate the Rite of Sending. This is the beginning of the final period of preparation for our Candidates and Catechumens in the RCIA program. Their Godparents and Sponsors will be asked to attest to their preparation to receive the sacraments of initiation and their readiness to participate in the Rite of Election to be held at the cathedral that afternoon. For those who have never experienced the Rite of Election, it is a celebration that brings together Catechumens and Candidates from across the diocese to be officially chosen in Christ to receive the sacraments of initiation. This is often the first chance for Candidates and Catechumens to experience the magnitude of the Church universal. Since there are so many people seeking entrance into the Church, there are usually four separate celebrations of this rite in our diocese alone, not to mention those taking place across the state, country and around the world. This Lent, I ask you to pray for our Candidates and Catechumens as they begin the final step of their journey. This is a life changing step and they need all the support and prayers we can offer. God bless you on your journey this Lent.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Have we really taken time to consider how important this Lenten season is to our spiritual lives? Are we ready to hunker down to prayer and sacrifice? If not, it is time to recognize the great sacrifice made for us on that cross. To that end, on Tuesday, four of our members will share their Lenten plans with us. It will give us all an opportunity to reflect and possibly contribute our own intentions. Our Lent will only be as positive, and good and effective as we make it. Let’s prepare. In Chapel, Tuesday 7:30PM.

TATIANA’S CONCERT at St. Antoninus on Wednesday, March 10, at 7:00p.m.  She will present “I Thirst,” a highly professional and artistic musical experience of Christ’s walk on Calvary told through songs.  There is no admission fee or tickets.  A free-will offering will be taken up.

ALL COUPLES CELEBRATING THEIR 25TH, 50TH, 60TH, 70TH OR 75TH WEDDING ANNIVERSAIES in 2010 should e-mail saintantoninus@fuse.net or call the parish office at 922-5400  with your names, address, phone # and your wedding date by March 1, 2010.
