The stewardship message in the parable of the prodigal son is that it is never too late to become a good steward. Blessed is the elder brother who had been a good steward all along, but blessed, too, is the prodigal, who had to lose all he had in order to understand the value of what he’d been given.

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Since Lent is a time not only for prayer and fasting but also for almsgiving, I want to urge you to participate in our parish's gift card and Scrips programs.  Published in this bulletin are the results of your thoughtfulness and generosity.  You are thoughtful because you take just a little extra time to purchase gift cards and scrip.  You are generous because your thoughtfulness means extra funds to operate our parish.  When I noticed that Bob Evans Restaurants were featured, I bought a few of their gift cards because I take my parents there almost every Wednesday (my day off) for dinner.  That means 10% of my purchase will be returned to the parish.   Your sacrificing a little of your time to purchase the cards will make a significant difference for your parish. I also want to take the opportunity to thank the many parishioners who have volunteered their time and talent to run the program.  All of you do great work! THANKS.

                                    Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT ME 10: "I am a person who is spiritually committed."  Of the 609/625 parish respondents, 38% strongly agreed, 36% agreed, 21% neither agreed nor disagreed, 4% disagreed, and 1% strongly disagreed.  The mean average was 4.05/5; among Catholic respondents, the mean average was 4.06/5; among all denominations, the mean average was 4.11/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, "This may seem like an obvious statement but it is not.  People who are spiritually committed know they are; those who are not committed don't quite understand the item.  Fifty percent of Americans agree that they are spiritually committed."   Next week, the perspective will change from those who are "committed" to those who are "engaged."

COFIRMATION:  I want to congratulate the newly confirmed of our parish, their parents, sponsors, and catechists.  May the Holy Spirit confirm our faith and helps become more and more like the Risen Christ.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

For the past couple of weeks, St. Antoninus has been given many reasons to celebrate.  This past Thursday, our seventh graders were confirmed by retired Archbishop Pilarczyk.  Please continue to pray for these students that they follow where the Holy Spirit leads them.  For most of these students the next “new” sacrament will be either Marriage or possibly for a few, Holy Orders.

Also we are celebrating the success of our two academic teams at the Academic Tournament at LaSalle High School.  On Tuesday, March 2, our seventh grade team made up of Frank E., Howie H., Ben J., Brady K., Kevin R., and Matthew W. took second place beating 12 other area Catholic grade schools.  The eighth grade followed up with a first place finish on Thursday, March 4, defeating 13 other Catholic grade schools.  The eighth grade team was comprised of:  Jack B., Derrick B., Benjamin E., Daniel F., and Maria R.  Congratulations to both teams.

Yet another success celebrated recently was our “Architecture by Children” winners.  This competition sponsored by American Institute of Architects, places a local architect in the classroom to help students use architecture to solve a given problem.  This year’s project involved finding an existing building or structure, no longer in use, and redesigning it for a new purpose.  We sent six projects from our building downtown to be judged.  The team “Boarder’s Paradise” made up of Nathan W., Brandon A., and Richard R. took first place in two catagories, Master Craftsman and Future Architect.  The team “Junior’s Gym” made up of Jack B., Jack J., and Benjamin E., took first place in the category Most Successful Use of Green Design.  Morgan C. took home an honorable mention for her entry “Planet Coffee” for the category Master Carftsman.  Other students whose projects selected to represent our school in the citywide competition were Brandon B., David C., Maria R., and Jonathan B.

My own personal thanks go to Mrs. Obermeyer for preparing our students so well for Confirmation, Mr. Besse for his time working with our academic teams after school, Mr. Nie and parishioners Mr. Junker and Mrs. Amy Cappel who worked with our students for the Architecture by Children competition, and you, our parishioners, for all your support.  Finally, thank you to all parents, faculty and staff who work tirelessly for our students.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)

Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh… woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep. (Luke 6:21b, 25b)

The following is based upon Beatitudes Eight Steps to Happiness by Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap. The contradiction between weeping to laugh and laughing to weeping provides the basis of the message in this beatitude, the principles of pleasure and pain. We often try to separate these two principles but fail to realize their interconnectedness. It is human nature to seek pleasure in this life without pain or suffering, but the reward is short and unfulfilling. If it provides lasting pleasure and joy, it comes with a cost. Famous paintings, a hard earned job promotion, and raising fine upstanding children all come at a cost; some pain is endured to receive a lasting pleasure. Looking at the cross, we realize that Christ did not endure suffering as a result of overindulged pleasure in this life; rather, He endured pain to produce unlimited, eternal pleasure in the next. Here are a few points for reflection this week. When I am afflicted and endure suffering and pain, do I see it as a punishment or a chance to imitate Christ? When I am sad or depressed, would God be sad for the same reasons? Do I seek self consolation over consoling others? Do I brag about my adversities or keep them between God and myself?

Solemn Parish Novena to St. Joseph, husband of Mary

From March 11 to March 19, there will be a solemn Parish Novena to St. Joseph.  I suppose my own devotion to St. Joseph began when I saw his statue in our Christmas crèche when I was a child.  I chose “Joseph” as my Confirmation name when I was in the third grade.  The one and only time I ever was the last student standing in our 4th grade Friday morning “spell down” I won a St. Joseph’s medal.  My devotion to St. Joseph grew in the seminary, especially when I began to work with the Little Sisters of the Poor.  They would tell the most wonderful stories of God’s providential care for them through the intercession of St. Joseph.  When I became pastor I placed all of our temporal affairs under his patronage because he was responsible for the material welfare of the Holy Family.  But even more than that, God himself chose St. Joseph to be His foster father here on earth.  St. Joseph taught Jesus how to pray and how to earn a living.  It is said that Jesus has never ceased to obey St. Joseph even in heaven.  It is with such confidence that we turn to him now.  In these uncertain economic times, in the face of homes foreclosure, job losses and real-estate transactions, we commend those and all of our material needs to that most loving of fathers, St. Joseph.  But more than that, we turn to him with our spiritual needs:  to teach us to pray and to be faithful to Sunday Mass; to protect our families; to protect our chastity; to bless the work of our hands.  Please join us in saying the Novena prayer everyday from March 11 to March 19 for yourself and for all the members of our parish.  On March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph we will have a St. Joseph’s table in church to collect can-goods for the hungry.

Novena Prayer St. Joseph

March 11- March 19

O gentle, loving God, you

chose Saint Joseph to watch over

the Divine Child and Our Blessed

Lady, knowing that his care would

be loving and sure, constant and wise.

We seek his care and his protection,

entrusting our spiritual and temporal

needs to his fatherly intercession.

Saint Joseph, strengthen our faith,

renew our hope and keep us steadfast

in God’s love.  Surround us with His

unseen light, and we will walk in your

footsteps with trusting hearts that are

ready to accept God’s Will and carry it

out with courage and trusting confidence.
