Dear Parishioners, My spiritual father, Dom Bernard, told me they have a precious relic at their monastery in La Trappe, France. That relic is said to be the "stone not thrown." That stone refers to those not thrown by those who wanted to stone the woman caught in adultery as we hear in today's gospel. They did not throw those stones when they heard the admonition of Jesus: "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." It is tempting to cast that first stone. However, we do well to resist that temptation. One sure way is to confess contritely our own sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, to be absolved of those sins by the priest in persona Christi, do penance and to take to heart the words Jesus spoke in that same gospel: "Go and sin no more." Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong
MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25: For the past ten weeks we have been looking at the response to those questions which referred to spiritual commitment. Spiritual commitment reflects a personal depth of spirituality. It is individual in nature and is seen in both behaviors and attitudes. Those 4 attitudes are: 1) my faith is involved in every aspect of my life; 2) because of my faith, I have meaning and purpose of my life; 3) my faith gives me inner peace; 4) I am a person who is spirituality committed. The 5 behaviors include: 1) I spend time in worship or prayer everyday; 2) my faith calls me to develop my strengths; 3) I will take unpopular stands to defend my faith; 4) I speak words of kindness to those in need of encouragement; 5) because of my faith I have forgiven people who have hurt me deeply. CONGREGATIONAL ENGAGEMENT however is a distinct concept with its own characteristics. Congregational engagement describes the degree of belonging an individual has in his or her congregation. We will explore those responses in the coming weeks.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Your penance during Lent can give the poor the grace of finding the merciful heart of God the Father. And through your almsgiving you are performing a good work for those same poor.
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP In the Year of the Priests it is important for us to realize that God established the priesthood among the ancient Hebrews through Moses and Aaron. In the New Covenant Jesus established the priesthood of the Apostles and their successors. This is Biblical truth. Each week of these teachings by Father Armstrong and through discussion and study, we are more enlightened about God’s total plans for our salvation. Let us recognize the gift we have been given in our priests and in the Sacraments they bring to us, especially here at St A. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

As we head towards the time of year when the weather allows us to take students on field trips, hold our Jog-a-thon, and hold the run/walks on Tuesday evenings in the lower parking lot, please note that it is not just the weather allowing us to provide these opportunities. Our volunteers allow the parish and school to provide more opportunities for our children and families than many other parishes. Nearly all of our parish activities require volunteers. Our parish festival is put on by our volunteers from the athletic club. Our fish fry is run by volunteers from the Boy Scouts organization. Our PTO, Girl Scouts, Drama, and all the other parish organizations do such a great job to provide a number of opportunities for all parishioners. These activities help keep our children active in parish life. Our volunteers also serve as great role models for the next generation. Thank you to all of our volunteers.
MATTHEW ROBBEN Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 The following is based upon Beatitudes Eight Steps to Happiness by Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap. There are two prevailing interpretations of the beatitudes, moral and Christological. It is important to note that the moral interpretation should lead us to the Christological understanding and the imitation of Jesus Christ. The beatitudes, then, are a self portrait of Jesus himself. Looking at his life gives us clues in how to live the beatitudes in our own lives. Jesus was the meek one! We see the ultimate expression of this in his passion. Amidst the pain and excruciating weight of our sins, he offered no scorn, or contempt. Jesus’ reaction to the passion has much to say about our own situation since September 11, 2001, and the increase of violent religious expression. Are we called to imitate Christ’s response to the passion in our lives today? Am I meek? Do I make a non-violent response physically and verbally in response to attack? Am I truly kind and friendly to those around me? |
