Today is Father's Day. I want to acknowledge all of our fathers and those who have taken on the role of a father in our lives. Page after page of research indicates how important fathers are in the lives of their children. It is by way of contrast that I have mentioned more than once the experience I had visiting a maximum security prison for juvenile criminals: not one boy knew who his father was. (By the way, all of them were white.) Therefore, I want to praise our fathers for the sacrifices they make in rearing their children. As the blessing prayer for fathers states in the liturgy of Baptism of Infants, "...[Fathers] will be the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith; with their wives, may they also be the best of teachers..." a triple AMEN to that! Happy Father's Day!

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25: ME22 "In my parish, I have opportunities to learn and grow." Of the 586/625 parish respondents, 25% strongly agreed, 38% agreed, 27% neither agreed nor disagreed, 7% disagreed, and 3% strongly disagreed. The parish mean average was 3.75/5; for all Catholics it was 3.82/5; for all denominations, it was 4.05/5. According to Growing An Engaged Church, "if you want to encourage more community outreach among your members, provide more opportunities for spiritual growth...but it means different things to different people." The author suggests that each one needs to take responsibility to find and create such opportunities and to track progress. Such ongoing evaluation helps to discern which learning and growth opportunities are most effective within the parish.

Of the four National Merit Qualifiers from Mother of Mercy High School this year, two of them are former St. Antoninus students. Katie Deitsch and Elizabeth Ruwe qualified with their PSAT scores from this past fall. Congratulations to both of them. As we celebrate Fathers’ Day today an interesting statistic reminds us of the important role of fathers in the regular Mass attendance of their children. From a 1994 survey of Swiss religious practice, key questions were asked about the impact of parents' church attendance on the subsequent church attendance of their adult children. “In summary, if a father does not go to church, no matter how regular the mother is in her religious practice, only one child in 50 becomes a regular church attender. But if a father attends regularly then regardless of the practice of the mother at least one child in three will become a regular church attender.” Please say a special prayer for all fathers today.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP The book of Psalms is a Biblical treasure of prayers and hymns that have come to us from men and women of the Old Testament who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. They cried out to God in their afflictions and in their joy with words that stir our love and trust even today. The prayer group is going to feature a series of reflections on some of the psalms and canticles over the next several months. Different members of the group will offer their thoughts on specific Bible passages. To start us off, Kay Schmidl will give an overview of the book of Psalms this Tuesday evening. She will give us some information about the makeup of this book, its divisions, and hints on how to approach it in order to appreciate it more fully. Join us, Tuesday evening in Chapel 7:30 PM.
